An Online Self-Management Program for Adults with Rheumatoid Arthritis

The study will evaluate the effectiveness of an online arthritis self-management program that has previously been proven to be effective in a clinic setting. The program will include 10 lessons and an online community where you can communicate with others involved in the study.  Your doctor must confirm your age and your RA diagnosis.

Ten lessons on how to self-manage your RA address topics like managing stress, fatigue, and pain, effective coping, emotional responses, managing change, the importance of receiving social support from others, life goals, and how you feel about yourself with RA. Each week focuses on a topic and will include talking with an experienced facilitator on the telephone by appointment. You will be able to interact with other people who have RA in the online community to give and receive support. Throughout the study you will be encouraged to use all features of the site.

Since this is a research project, everyone who participates will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. Both groups are important to answering the research questions.  One group will have immediate access to the community while the other group will wait one year to receive access. Both groups will complete questionnaires lasting 30 minutes every three months during the study.  The length of the study is 1 year. All participants will be compensated at the end of the study for the time they spend completing the questionnaires.

You will need to follow these steps to learn more about participating in the study:

  1. Send an email by clicking here or call the study staff toll-free at 1-888-740-6626 to indicate your interest in joining the study or to obtain more information.
  2. Answer some questions in a brief screening interview to determine if you qualify.
  3. Obtain confirmation from your doctor of your age and diagnosis.
  4. When confirmation from your doctor is received by the study staff, your group assignment will be made and you will be given a Login ID and password to start the program.
